The Right Way to Prepare Job Interviews with ChatGPT
- and how to avoid to sound like a robot
Published on by Gernot Sauerborn
I see many of my international professional clients using Artificial Intelligence to prepare for interviews in the D-A-CH region. It is a smart move—if you know how to use it correctly.
Used the wrong way, ChatGPT can actually destroy your chances. Used the right way, it is a powerful tool to build your confidence and clarity. Let’s look at how to navigate this.
When ChatGPT makes sense
German job interviews are often very specific and structured. They dig deep into your qualifications, your motivation, and your fit for the Unternehmenskultur (company culture).
ChatGPT is excellent for helping you understand what is really being asked. You can ask it to explain common German interview phrases, or to list the types of situational questions (Verhaltensfragen) common in your industry. It helps you prepare the topics you need to cover.
But preparing for a job interview with ChatGPT has limits
This is where many candidates stumble. It is tempting to copy a job description into ChatGPT and ask for the "perfect answer."
But a generic, AI-generated answer sounds exactly like that: generic. It lacks your voice, your specific career history, and your personality. It is a script written by a machine, not a story told by you.
Even worse: Memorizing or Reading Those Perfect Answers
This might be the fastest way to end your application process.
Imagine this: You walk into the room, nervous but prepared. You have memorized a perfectly structured, grammatically flawless answer to "Tell us about yourself." It sounds professional. But then, the follow-up question comes. You haven't prepared that one. Suddenly, your spoken German—with its natural pauses, small errors, and real-time formulations—stands in stark contrast to your earlier "perfection."
This incongruence is a red flag for any experienced interviewer. It creates doubt. They don't wonder if you used AI; they wonder if they can trust you. In the D-A-CH workplace, consistency and authenticity are highly valued. When your performance is inconsistent, the trust is broken, and the Gespräch is usually over.
The Key: The Right Prompt Changes Everything
So, how do you use ChatGPT correctly? You use it to translate your reality into German, not to generate a fantasy.
The trick is in the prompt. Instead of asking for a generic answer, try a prompt like this:
"I am preparing for a job interview for a [Job Title] position in Germany. I have [Number] years of experience in [Your Field]. Please help me formulate an answer to the question '[Insert Question]' in German. The answer should be based on my experience, use simple language for a B2 speaker, and sound like a real person, not a corporate robot."This forces the AI to work with your facts and your language level. The result is a draft that you can then practice, internalize, and make your own.
The goal is not to recite a script, but to prepare phrases and key points that allow you to respond spontaneously. This way, you can listen carefully to the interviewer’s actual question and adapt your prepared thoughts to address it precisely, creating a genuine and focused dialogue.
Moving on With Systemic Solution Oriented Coaching
What would it take to trust that what truly distinguishes you—your unique experiences, your way of thinking, your problem-solving instincts—is far more memorable than any perfectly phrased generic answer, and that your German skills, however imperfect, are simply the medium through which that uniqueness becomes visible? When have you already communicated something complex in a second language and, despite a few stumbles, felt that the other person truly understood your meaning and valued what you had to say?
What are your real strengths, independent of language fluency—perhaps your ability to connect, your analytical mind, your resilience across cultures—and how could you bring those into the conversation so clearly that they become the center of attention, leaving the quality of your German as a secondary detail? And what would give you the confidence to walk in freely, even with imperfect German, knowing that you are there to share your authentic self rather than to perform a flawless script?
Systemic solution-focused coaching helps you identify and anchor your genuine differentiators, separate them from language anxiety, and build the inner security to show up with presence rather than perfection. It trains you to shift focus from linguistic precision to authentic connection—so that your confidence no longer depends on flawless German, but on the clarity of what you stand for and the courage to express it in your own words.
